Description
Karlstad University is focussing in research and teaching in ecology and nature conservation, particularly in freshwater environments. The biology group with about 30 staff members is part of the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology. Biology is offered as a subject at the undergraduate and Master level. Currently seven students are enrolled in the doctoral programme in biology.

At Karlstad University, research in biology is done in two main specialisations: river ecology and conservation, as well as biology education. NRRV, the River Ecology and Management research group, does research on ecology and conservation. The group has been designated a strong research group at Karlstad University from 2017, and has received additional funding to develop its research profile. This position is thus primarily connected to ecology and conservation. Researchers focus on issues related to water management, the importance of riparian zones for aquatic organisms, biotic interactions and habitat ecology, fish migration, winter ecology, and the ecology of freshwater mussels (www.kau.se/biologi/forskning; nrrv.se). The research group works with internal and external partners, such as county administrative boards, municipalities, hydropower companies, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, as well as the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. Research on biology education concentrates on teaching and learning related to genetics and sustainable development, and forms part of SMEER, the Centre of Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research (http://www.kau.se/en/smeer).

We are now recruiting a new senior lecturer in biology with specialisation in landscape ecology to complement the research done by NRRV at Karlstad University.

Duties
The position primarily involves teaching ecology at the undergraduate level, teaching specialisation courses in conservation biology, evolutionary biology or behavioural ecology, as well as relevant courses at the Master level – primarily in conservation biology. The successful applicant may also be required to teach courses in the teacher education programme or other courses in the biology programme.

The position also involves complementing the research already conducted in the biology group, as well as supervising future doctoral students. We expect the successful applicant to develop new externally funded research projects together with researchers in the River Ecology and Management research group. Cooperation with the education research group SMEER is also possible.

Qualification requirements
The eligibility requirements are a doctor’s degree in biology with specialisation in landscape ecology, or equivalent academic qualifications. The successful applicant has documented research and teaching skills in biology with specialisation in landscape ecology. Other eligibility requirements are stipulated in Ch. 4 Sec. 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment criteria
Equal weight is given to research and teaching skills. The assessment is based on the criteria stipulated in Ch. 4 Sec. 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Special weight is given to: (1) The relevance of the applicant’s research for the research focus of NRRV. (2) Documented teaching skills and experience of teaching and course development in biology at the undergraduate and Master level.

Considerable weight is given to: (1) Successfully securing external research funding. (2) Ability to maintain good relationships with colleagues and students and ability to take initiative and to be involved in initiatives taken by others.

Weight is given to (1) Documented research activities related to the interaction between terrestrial and aquatic environments at the landscape scale. (2) Modelling skills. (3) Experience of teaching on the teacher education programme and/or the applicant’s teaching qualifications. (4) Experience of communicating research results to different target groups. (5) Ability to collaborate with partners in and outside of academia.
